My Journey to Millet Living: How a Lifelong Love for Cooking Led Me Here 🌾🍛

Growing up in Rajasthan, India, I was surrounded by the rich culinary traditions of my homeland. Rajasthan is not just a land of bold spices and royal flavors—it’s also home to a variety of ancient millets that have nourished generations before me. But back then, I didn’t realize how deeply connected I would become to these humble grains. Cooking has always been a part of my life. From a young age, I found joy in the kitchen, experimenting with flavors and working alongside my mom. I did my bachelor’s degree in home science from Sophia Girls’ College in Ajmer, which further deepened my passion for food and nutrition. But my love for cooking wasn’t just about making meals—it was about creating experiences, and bringing people together through food.
A Life-Changing Shift: Discovering Millets
In my late 20s, I moved to the United States, where I was introduced to a world of new cuisines. From hearty Italian pastas to delicate asian dumplings, I was fascinated by the diversity of food cultures. But amid all these culinary explorations, life threw me an unexpected challenge – I was diagnosed with celiac disease. For someone whose world revolved around food, going gluten-free felt overwhelming at first. My daily comfort food of daal-roti and other wheat based dishes that I had grown up with were suddenly off-limits. But instead of letting this restriction hold me back, I saw it as an opportunity—to explore, adapt, and reinvent the way I cooked.
That’s when I rediscovered millets. Millets weren’t new to me—back home in Rajasthan, they had always been part of our traditional diet. But now, I saw them in a completely new light. These tiny grains weren’t just gluten-free; they were nutrient-dense, gut-friendly, and incredibly versatile. They became the answer to my cravings for comfort food, the bridge between my past and present, and the foundation of what would become Millet Living.
Reimagining Millets for the Modern Kitchen
Cooking with millets felt like a creative adventure. They could do so much more than I had ever realized. I started experimenting, incorporating them into world cuisines—millet dumplings, millet pasta, millet-based salads—transforming these ancient grains into modern, approachable meals. They weren’t just a healthy alternative; they were delicious, exciting, and full of possibilities. Along the way, I also rekindled my love for spice blending, creating unique mixes that complemented the nutty flavors of millets. The kitchen became my lab, a place where I merged tradition with innovation, where I honored my roots while embracing new culinary influences.
